Students at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, law school staged a powerful walkout on Tuesday, a bold move fueled by their belief that the university caved to political pressure, leading to the rescinding of an offer to Emily Suski as the new dean. This wasn't just any protest; it was a passionate defense of academic freedom and free speech.
"She was our choice!" exclaimed Addison Brooks, a third-year law student and a driving force behind the demonstration. Brooks articulated the frustration felt by many, stating that Suski, who was enthusiastically selected by both faculty and students, was ultimately “taken away from us” by individuals who believed they knew better. The implication? Her views were deemed “too scary to say in Arkansas.” Brooks powerfully argued that such “intervention in the process is really irresponsible,” and that the university seemed to prioritize the opinions of “external stakeholders” over the desires of its own community – the “internal stakeholders.”
This demonstration, involving approximately 130 students, was deliberately nonpartisan. The core message was the crucial need to protect free speech and academic freedom. Marching across campus, their chants and signs, such as “Hands off our school,” “Keep the capitol out of classrooms,” “No one learns in an echo chamber,” and “Law school trains minds, not mouthpieces,” echoed their commitment to an open intellectual environment. Remarks were also delivered outside the student union, amplifying their concerns.
Brooks, a native of rural south Arkansas, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "What matters is viewpoint discrimination, which has no place in Arkansas, regardless of the opinion." He warned of the long-term consequences, predicting that this decision would significantly hamper the law school's ability to attract top-tier faculty and students, making them a national “laughingstock” and ultimately harming the entire state of Arkansas.
But here's where it gets controversial... Less than a week after Suski's appointment was announced, the university reversed its decision, citing feedback from “key external stakeholders,” notably including Republican state lawmakers. Senators Dan Sullivan and Bart Hester, among others, reportedly contacted university officials and trustees, expressing unease about past legal stances Suski had supported. And this is the part most people miss... Their primary concern revolved around an amicus brief Suski had co-signed, which supported a challenge to state bans prohibiting transgender girls from participating in female sports – a case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.
In contrast to the students' outrage, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Attorney General Tim Griffin publicly applauded the university's decision. Suski, a respected professor and associate dean from the University of South Carolina, was slated to begin her deanship on July 1st. Other finalists for the position included Oren Griffin, Colin Crawford, and William Corbett, all accomplished legal scholars who had visited campus and presented their visions.
