"I take full responsibility": Rosenior shifts focus from Sánchez following Chelsea’s defeat
In a post-match press conference, Liam Rosenior came to the defense of goalkeeper Robert Sánchez after the latter’s significant mistakes led to Chelsea’s 3-2 loss against Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final held at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
While it’s evident that Sánchez has shown signs of improvement this season, his performance was marred by critical errors that resulted in goals from both Ben White and Viktor Gyökeres. The Spaniard's mishap on an early corner kick allowed White to score the opening goal for Arsenal, followed by Gyökeres doubling the lead after taking advantage of another blunder from Chelsea’s number one keeper.
Nevertheless, Rosenior, who seemed unfazed by suffering his first defeat at home as a manager, found solace in his team’s resilience despite their injury troubles. He expressed unwavering support for Sánchez, emphasizing the collective responsibility of the team. "I believe the first goal was quite disappointing," the head coach stated. "It’s essential to recognize that this is a team issue, not solely Rob’s fault. I’m asking him to undertake responsibilities that are new to him. When my players falter, that falls on me."
Rosenior highlighted a critical save made by Sánchez in the second half, which he described as "world-class" and crucial for keeping Chelsea in the game. "That moment could have sealed our fate in this tie. I’m optimistic about his growth in understanding his role, and I plan to maintain a positive outlook for him, as well as for the entire squad. My duty is to support them, not to point fingers."
Chelsea appeared on the brink of defeat after Martín Zubimendi scored, bringing the score to 3-1 in the 71st minute. However, hope flickered for the Blues when Alejandro Garnacho netted two goals after entering the match in the second half, reigniting Chelsea’s chances. "The game is still alive," remarked Mikel Arteta. "While the current feeling isn’t ideal, we must appreciate what the team has accomplished again. This is only the first half, and we’re aware of the significant challenge awaiting us at the Emirates since they are a top-level team."
Chelsea faced multiple absences due to injuries, with Cole Palmer, Reece James, and Malo Gusto unavailable, alongside Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens who were sidelined by illness, and Moisés Caicedo who was suspended. Rosenior expressed hope that Palmer would recover from his thigh strain in time to participate in the upcoming match against Brentford on Saturday. "We’re hopeful he can join training on Friday and be ready for Saturday’s game. If we rush him back too soon in January with a minor strain, it could lead to a six-week setback. Losing Cole Palmer for that long would be detrimental because he’s an exceptional player."
Additionally, Rosenior noted that Delap and Gittens were experiencing "dangerously high" fevers, but he remains confident that the illness has not spread to the rest of the team.
