Get ready for a significant traffic shake-up in the Seattle area! One of the most crucial I-5 overpasses is slated for a prolonged closure, and it's going to affect your daily commute and your ability to reach the 145th Street light rail station.
While the complete shutdown of the N.E. 145th overpass is still about a month away, the groundwork is already being laid. Starting this Monday, 5th Avenue N.E. will be closed north of 145th Street beginning at 9 p.m. This initial closure is designed to prevent access to northbound I-5 until March 31st and will also block access to the transit center from the south.
But here's where it gets interesting: The City of Shoreline is embarking on a major infrastructure upgrade, aiming to create a two-lane roundabout on the east side of I-5. This new roundabout will mirror the one that recently opened on the west side of the freeway. Before the full closure of 145th Street, which is scheduled from March 19th to March 31st, essential utility work needs to be completed. During this period, while vehicles will be significantly impacted, bicyclists and pedestrians will still be able to cross the freeway.
Shoreline Public Works Director Tricia Juhnke explained the complexities involved. On the west side of I-5, workers had to excavate about 10 feet of road. Now, on the east side, they face the opposite challenge: adding dirt to raise the roadway by four to five feet in certain areas. Juhnke highlighted that performing such extensive work while the road is open to traffic would be incredibly difficult and potentially unsafe.
This construction is undoubtedly going to create major disruptions for commuters and local residents. Juhnke's advice? "Follow the detour routes." She cautioned against using side streets, as they can pose increased safety risks. The designated detours, she assured, have been carefully planned to minimize impacts and ensure safe travel.
For those needing to access the transit center during the closure, approaching from the north will be the only option. To help manage traffic flow, the city has implemented some adjustments on N.E. 155th Street. Once the construction wraps up on March 31st, drivers will encounter the new roundabout, though initially, only one of its two lanes will be operational.
And this is the part most people miss: The final push to complete the remaining work after March 31st is expected to be a rapid one, with the goal of finishing by May or early June. This ambitious project, which commenced in 2024, has required considerable effort. Director Juhnke expressed her gratitude for everyone's patience, acknowledging that adjusting routines can be challenging. She emphasized that it's a case of "short-term pain for long-term gain."
Once fully realized, Juhnke believes this revamped corridor will be truly transformational for the region. She pointed out that the Seattle area doesn't currently have a roundabout system of this kind, and its implementation is expected to lead to significant improvements in how people navigate the area.
Adding to the enhancements, the City of Shoreline is also constructing a new pedestrian bridge over I-5, designed to connect directly to the transit center. This bridge will be built adjacent to the freeway and then lifted into place, with an anticipated opening next year.
